“"Not an Afterthought or Contingency Plan"”

Ephesians 1:7

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace…

Thoughts for Today:

The Greek word translated for "redemption" is APOLYTROSIS, which according to Thayer's Greek Lexicon means, "to redeem one by paying a price... to let one go free on receiving the price." Matthew 20:28 and Mark 10:45 are two verses making it very clear that the price for our redemption was the life of Jesus -- His blood. (Matthew 20:28: "Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Mark 10:45: "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.")

Hebrews 9:14 tells us: "How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!" In our passage today, Paul explains that is it’s "in accordance with the riches of God's grace" that we have received the forgiveness of sins. In other words, the whole plan and program for the redemption of humanity by the blood of His Son Jesus, was God's designed purpose from the very beginning. It wasn't an afterthought or contingency plan.

Questions to Ponder:

How great is God's grace? It is boundless, over sufficient, and unsurpassed in richness and majesty -- and I need every bit of it. What about you? Do you need God's grace as well? Will you humble yourself in His presence?
